ABB leads the development of electric industry by virtue of digital solutions

8 ABB local companies ranked among the “2016 China Top 100 Electric Companies”

Beijing, December 9, 2016

ABB was recognized with 8 local companies ranking among “the 17th China Top 100 Electric Companies” according to the ranking announced on December 9, and won another two important prestigious awards, “China’ s Top 10 Electric Companies by Competitiveness” and “China’ s Top 10 Electric Companies by Innovation Capability”. This demonstrated ABB’s leadership in the development of electric and manufacturing industries in the new round of industrial revolution.

“China Top 100 Electric Companies” is an annual award hosted by Electric Age, a leading trade magazine sponsored by the China Machinery Industry Information Institute. Initiated in 2000, this event has been held for 17 years consecutively and has become the annual focus and a barometer of the Chinese electric industry.

Mr. Zhou Baodong, Deputy Party Secretary of the China Machinery Industry Information Institute, said, “With the rise of a new round of technical revolution, the electric equipment manufacturing industry is gradually shifting from element-driven to innovation-driven development, and upgrading from traditional manufacturing to intelligent manufacturing. Faced with various challenges under New Normal, China’s electric companies, especially the top 100 electric companies strived to enhance their comprehensive strength while maintaining a growth in revenues by fostering innovation.”

As the new generation of information technologies are increasingly integrated into utility, industry, transport and infrastructure sectors, digitalization and intellectualization have become the key directions for industrial development and revolution, creating new opportunities. As a pioneering technology leader and global digital champion, ABB had more than 55% of revenues from software and digital devices. Based on above 70 million connected devices and above 70,000 installed control systems, ABB is using its profound knowledge of its customers’ domains to develop a unique digital offering and realize the full potential of digitalization with continuous innovation.

In 2016, ABB announced the milestone of its 50,000th robot manufactured in China and completed the second production line of servo motor in Shanghai to better meet the increasing demand of robot market for this key component. Meanwhile, ABB introduced a number of new robots to China such as the robot collaboration solution SafeMove2, IRB 1200 Foundry Plus2, and compact robot IRB1660ID, to support industrial restructuring and upgrade with digital and smart products, to facilitate China manufacturing’s transformation from a “big” to “strong”.

Energy efficiency is another key area of ABB’s innovation. In 2016, ABB launched Terra 53 Ze, a DC fast charger for China market with a total output power up to 50 kW, to meet the need of public charging stations, EV fleet parking lots and highway service stations to charge e-vehicles. ABB also introduced its first dedicated turbocharger for marine auxiliary engine applications to help the vessels reduce the fuel consumption and operating costs. In addition, ABB launched the flexible “plug and play” microgrid solution and new solar inverters, to promote the development and connection of renewables in China.

Based on its strong capabilities in R&D, engineering and service, ABB installed the onboard motion monitoring and forecasting system for COSCO Heavy Transport Fleet to improve its efficiency and safety; supplied Volvo with more than 200 IRB 6700 robots for higher productivity and lower costs; participated in the construction of the new subway and light tram projects in Shanghai, Qingdao, Nanjing, Wuhan and other cities to facilitate the rapid growth of urban rail transit; provided key electric devices for Rudong Offshore 150 MW Wind Farm Demonstration Project and Xiangshui 200MW Offshore Wind Farm Demonstration Project to support the integration of renewable energies; supplied key technologies and equipment for the extension project of Qinghai-Tibet HVDC (high-voltage direct current) power transmission line, three new ±800kV HVDC lines, and Jichang-Guquan HVDC link, the first 1,100kV HVDC project in the world, to help China transmit clean power with greater capacity, at further distance and in an more efficient and reliable way.

With a business network covering some 100 countries around the world, and rich experience in overseas project management, ABB has also provided its localized design, engineering, consultancy and services for Chinese enterprises’ EPC projects in countries along the route of the Belt and Road Initiative. To date, ABB has worked closely with Chinese enterprises such as China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC), China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec), China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), Northern Heavy Industries Group (NHI), China National Building Material Company (CNBM) and Harbin Electric Corporation in their projects across Asia, Middle East, Africa and Latin America.

ABB’s 8 companies listed on China’s Top 100 Electric Companies include ABB Engineering (Shanghai) Co. Ltd., ABB Beijing Drive Systems Co., Ltd., ABB Xiamen Low Voltage Equipment Co., Ltd., ABB Xiamen Switchgear Co., Ltd., ABB Xinhui Low Voltage Switchgear Co., Ltd., ABB High Voltage Switchgear Co., Ltd.
