Star Cruises chooses ABB to increase automation plant lifecycle onboard M/V Superstar Virgo

Unix Operator Station system upgraded with the latest 800xA Operator Station system onboard M/V Superstar Virgo - a cruise vessel operating in the Asiatic South East.
Sesto San Giovanni (Milano), June 26, 2013 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has successfully completed the upgrade of the Unix Operator Station system with the latest 800xA Operator Station system onboard M/V Superstar Virgo a cruise vessel of Star Cruises operating in the Asiatic South East.

Superstar Virgo used to run with an obsolete Unix Operator Station system. The importance of upgrading the system was connected with the decreased availability of spare parts that could cause downtime, but also problems in system availability and lack of skilled service engineers to operate on the old system.

The ABB’s scope of supply is a turnkey formula that includes: hardware, software, engineering, Factory Acceptance Test, installation and commissioning for a plant of 11 800xA Operator Stations, with around 400 video pages and 150 trends managed by 5 servers in redundant configurations.

All the retrofit project was done with the ship in operation while cruising in the Asiatic South East.
The main benefit for the customer is related to the extension of automation plant’s lifecycle with much more availability at a lower price of spare parts, assistance for workshop repair and onboard service.
Same retrofit was done on sister Ships of Superstar Virgo, Norwegian Spirit, which belongs to NCL (Norwegian Cruise Line).

Star Cruises ( together with NCL (Norwegian Cruise Line) is the third largest cruise operator in the world, with a combined fleet of 18 ships cruising to over 200 destinations, offering approximately 35,000 lower berths.

ABB ( is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 145,000 people.
