This year’s Power-Gen Europe exhibition and conference at Cologne, Germany on June 27-29 reflected an industry in a state of rapid evolution.
Europe’s power sector is redefining itself, aligning with the complexities of a digital age and opening itself to strategic and technical opportunities. To help define, shape and seize these opportunities, POWER-GEN Europe provided a holistic platform for power professionals to make sense of the transition to digitalization.
“ABB was privileged to share five presentations highlighting specific use cases and benefits achieved in the field with ABB AbilityTM Symphony® Plus solutions,” said Susan Peterson Sturm, Digital Lead for ABB’s Power Generation & Water business within the Industrial Automation division. “In addition to providing proof points of real customer gains from industrial digital solutions, the presentations showed the real-world application of important digital paradigms such as digital service-enabling solutions, industrial cyber security and virtual power plants.”
Virtual power pools for industry
ABB’s Sleman Saliba won a High Commendation award for his presentation on “Applications of Virtual Power Pools – Demand Response at Industrial Sites”. The paper shows how industrial sites can be integrated into virtual power pools, using the sites’ flexibility to manage and trade energy on a demand-response basis and without changing their production goals or moving production deadlines. Based on ABB Ability Symphony Plus technologies, this pioneering approach opens new opportunities to manage, trade and save energy for- industrial, commercial and even large-scale residential users.
Other ABB papers presented at the event include an account of the benefits of a single digital platform for Eskom’s new 4,800 MW supercritical power plant at Kusile, South Africa; a discussion of the latest generation of control and optimization solutions for district heating and cooling networks; an analysis of the digitalization lessons learned by ABB customers and how new business models enable them to capitalize on the new digital era; and an exploration of the different interests to be balanced - legal, financial, operational, etc. - for a cyber security program to be successful.
ABB supports Pennwell
ABB has a strong relationship with Pennwell, the organizer of POWER-GEN events worldwide, and has been working closely with them for many years to ensure the topics covered meet the interests of key industry players.
As of next year, POWER-GEN EUROPE will broaden its scope and change its name to Electrify Europe to reflect the changing landscape of the European power industry. The event will cover the ongoing convergence between the power generation and transmission and distribution sectors, driven by digitalization, decarbonization, decentralization and electrification.
As one of the world’s leading suppliers of digital solutions in all three sectors - generation, transmission and distribution - ABB supports this change and looks forward to playing a major role at the opening Electrify Europe event in Vienna, Austria, in June 2018 (www.electrify-europe.com).
