One of the largest privately owned solar rooftops in the region will be soon powered in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The 315 kW solar rooftop, a project undertaken by the pioneering technology leader, ABB will be at the company’s Al Quoz facility in Dubai. The electricity it generates will be used for powering the ABB office while feeding any surplus power to the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) grid. The UAE is renowned for its year around sunshine. The country is eager to develop a viable solar power market given the lengthy periods of sunshine it has each year. Abu Dhabi aims to generate 7% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020, while Dubai targets 15% by 2030.
This ABB solar rooftop further supports the Shams Dubai initiative that was launched by the state utility provider, DEWA to connect solar energy to buildings, a part of the Distributed Renewable Resources Generation program. This leading initiative supports the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai the smartest city in the world. It also supports diversifying the energy mix by promoting the use of clean and renewable energy sources to build a sustainable future for the Emirate.
A variety of ABB string inverters will be used to convert current in this solar plant. ABB inverters with IP65 enclosure and fan less design are well suited for this environment and an appropriate pick for solar installations in the Middle East. All of the PVI, Trio and PRO 33 inverters will be connected to a state-of-the-art ABB building monitoring system (BMS) and can be monitored remotely. The BMS system will control and monitor the complete solar rooftop system, the i-bus® KNX system (temperature and lighting control) plus the power management with the Emax2 air circuit breakers. This will enable monitoring of the inverters, meteorological department data, power metering and analysis of the building’s lighting and temperature settings as well. This solar rooftop is nearing completion and will be powered shortly.
