In the meantime, Alinta Energy provide energy to many homes and businesses. During the hot summer months energy providers need to be prepared to meet urgent shortfalls in electricity, when homes and businesses traditionally use more power. The Northern Power Station is now run six months per year to off-set shortages against higher energy demands in summer when temperatures can soar for days over 40 degrees celsius.
Recent works have been undertaken to ensure greater efficiencies at the power station in Port Augusta. Plant staff have replaced a redundant motor which helped to run a large gas recirculation fan. They needed an energy efficient, reliable motor designed for tough ambient conditions, with low vibration and noise levels but which was easy to install and maintain during summer.
With over 100 years of experience in supplying high voltage AC motors for virtually all industries, ABB supplied a high efficiency motor for this application. The Alinta Energy and ABB teams decided on a motor with optimised power output that would be interchangeable with older design motors.
ABB supply included a 6.6kV modular motor from its AMI series. The AMI560L6L, 6 pole motor rated for 1300kW was supplied with a Dodge coupling from its Baldor range of products. The coupling has a flexible tapered element which transmits torque efficiently while accommodating misalignment plus cushions shock loads. The AMI range of modular motors is available upto 13.8kV and 23MW in motor speeds ranging from 2 – 20 poles. The motors are reliable and rugged. Rotor bars are swagged to provide additional stiffness to withstand heavy use. This energy efficient motor package was designed to fit the existing water cooled motor fittings at the Northern Power Station.
With electric motors accounting for an estimated 65 percent of all industrial power usage, ABB’s safe, reliable and efficient motors are expected to support Alinta Energy in their quest to supply many homes and businesses with power this summer.
