New ABB inverter station offers a compact two-megawatt inverter solution for large-scale solar power generation

2014-03-31 - Inverter station, PVS800-IS offering a compact two-megawatt (MW) inverter solution is now available for rapid delivery.

The new ABB inverter station is a compact and robust solution that houses all the equipment that is needed to rapidly connect two central inverters to a medium-voltage (MV) transformer. A station houses two 875 kilowatt (kW) or 1000 kW ABB central inverters, PVS800, an embedded auxiliary power system and monitoring system. The PVS800 central inverters used in the station have high total efficiency, with one of the most compact and easy-to-maintain designs on the market. With flexible and integrated DC and AC connection cabinets, the inverter station can be rapidly and easily connected to the solar array and MV transformer.

“The inverter station combines ABB’s long experience of using power converters in demanding environments and applications and is now packed into a highly reliable and easy-to-use package. At the same time, the station is cost-effective to transport and fast to install, offering our customers a very straightforward solution for large-scale PV power generation,” says Jyrki Leppänen, Director, market management, solar inverters.

The housing is based on a standard steel-framed, insulated, 20-foot shipping container. The total package weighs only ten tons, allowing easy and safe transportation and handling. The station’s thermal insulation and two-stage air filtering system enables operation in harsh temperature and humidity environments and is designed for at least 25 years of operation.

The ABB inverter station, rated from 1.75 to 2 megawatts (MW), is designed for multi-megawatt PV power plants. Depending on the size of the PV power plant, several ABB inverter stations can be combined to meet the needed capacity. With a wide list of approvals and with advanced, flexible grid support functions, the inverter station meets all the applicable network connection requirements, regardless of where the project is located.

To help meet bankability requirements and secure the highest return on investment, ABB supports its customers with a dedicated global service network providing a complete range of life cycle services in more than 60 countries.

ABB ( is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 150,000 people.
