ABB in India announces annual production milestone of 10,000 vacuum circuit-breakers

Zurich, Switzerland, Dec. 15, 2016 — ABB in India has recently reached a milestone annual production of 10,000 medium-voltage indoor vacuum circuit-breakers (VCB) at its medium-voltage products facility in Nashik. The facility utilizes a state-of-the-art manufacturing process involving quality assurance as well as continuous improvement in technology and manufacturing processes to provide customers with high-quality products and services.
These advanced manufacturing and production techniques enable the factory to produce medium-voltage indoor circuit-breakers with high-process efficiency, maximizing product quality and traceability. VCBs are used in electrical distribution for control and protection of cables, overhead lines, transformer and distribution substations, motors, transformers, generators and capacitor banks.

“The annual production of 10,000 vacuum circuit-breakers is a new milestone and is a testament to ABB’s quality systems and excellent manufacturing processes. Vacuum circuit-breakers are playing an increasingly important role in the stable, safe and reliable operation of customer equipment,” said Bruno Melles, managing director of ABB's Medium Voltage business.

Vacuum circuit-breakers
Circuit-breakers are critical to the safe operation of the electricity grid, interrupting high currents to protect electrical equipment from damage caused by current surges. They require a medium such as gas, oil or vacuum to inhibit arc formation between the open contacts of the breaker. VCBs utilize vacuum as an arc-quenching medium, offering the highest insulating strength and more superior arc quenching properties than any other insulation.

“We are proud to have reached our goal of 10,000 VCBs. The solar market growth in India has helped us, but we’ve also had a lot of business coming from the 36 kV market through OEMs and through air-insulated primary switchgear. We are now setting up new benchmarks to achieve 15,000 VCBs,” said Ganesh Kothawade, local business unit manager for Medium Voltage Products in India.

Nashik manufacturing facility
ABB’s Nashik facility, founded in 1978, has been manufacturing VCBs since 2000 and today is one of the leading manufacturers of medium-voltage primary air-insulated switchgear, ring main units, indoor and outdoor circuit-breakers, compact substations, vacuum interrupters and service solutions in India. The factory manufactures the complete range of VCBs rated from 6.6 kV to 36 kV and 20 kA to 44 kA. The latest addition to the VCB family is the VInd range with mechanical actuators.
