The ABB facility based in Sorocaba, Brazil, manufactures a range of circuit breakers used by Caterpillar to produce power generators. ABB’s Brazilian factory is one of five ABB manufacturing facilities certified by the Caterpillar’s Supplier Quality Excellence program (SQEP). Today the list is led by United States (Platinum), followed by Brazil and Switzerland (Gold), England (Silver) and China (Bronze).
“Throughout the certification process, new business opportunities were developed, enhancing the partnership through additional services offered by ABB to Caterpillar,” said Rafael Pestitschek, Supplier Quality Engineer in Caterpillar Brazil.
ABB and Caterpillar teamed up for ten months in various audit-related processes to comply with the SQEP requirements, focusing on quality control, manufacturing layout, work process, training plan, risk management and others.
“Such approval enhances the partnership, bringing the relationship to a strategic level with great significance for new business development. ABB’s knowledge of the high standards required by Caterpillar around the world help it to differentiate from competitors when bidding for business,” says Paolo Pescali, regional manager for Electrification Products division, South America.
The Gold Level certification in the Supplier Quality Excellence Program is valid for a year and the facility is assessed again for recertification the following year. A thorough review of compliance to Caterpillar’s exacting metrics is made each year and the rating can be raised if the facility is rated in accordance with the requirements for Platinum Level status, the highest of the categories.
