ABB holds university innovation contest for the sixth year in a row

Inviting university students across the country to submit creative proposals on the future of digitalization

Beijing, March 1, 2017——ABB kicked off the 6th university innovation contest (UIC 2017) today. University students are welcome to join the contest with their bold conception and creativity on the applicaton of digital technologies in utility, industry, transport and infrastructure sectors, in line with the theme of this event, ”Link Digitalization to Our Future”.

Today, digital technologies represented by the industrial Internet, cloud computing, big data, mobile computing and telecommunication, are increasingly integrated into our production and daily life, and they have pushed forward the reform and transformation of many industries. As a pioneering technology leader and global digital champion, ABB launched ABB AbilityTM in 2016 to realize the full digital potential together with customers. ABB will use its profound knowledge of its customers’ domains to plan, build and operate a unique digital offering which will deliver true operational differentiation for customers.

The UIC 2017 is open to full-time undergraduates, postgraduate students and doctoral students in Greater China including Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and mainland China. It covers three topics: “Smart city", "Internet of energy” and "Digital factory" with several subtopics including the supply and optimization of urban resources, electric vehicle infrastructure, smart home and intelligent building, multi-energy complementary technology, vehicle to grid technology, active distribution system, the interconnection, analysis and visualization of intelligent devices, digitalization of robotic system, and the design of intelligent products. Participants can select one of them for design and creation.

Registration and works submission’s deadline is August 10, 2017. All finalists will compete in the final defense on September 21 to win the first, second and third prizes as well as internships opportunities at ABB. For more information about the UIC 2017, please visit

Launched in 2012 for the first time, the UIC has provided a platform to university students to seek inspiration in innovation, exchange ideas and demonstrate their abilities. Up to now, it has attracted over 6,000 participants from more than 200 universities and received more than 1000 submissions.
