ABB Ireland wins Major UK Driver Safety Award

2013-06-21 - ABB Ireland has claimed the Driver Safety Award (smaller fleets) at the annual Brake Fleet Safety Forum Gala in Birmingham. ABB Ireland was also shortlisted for a second award, the Fleet Safety Partnership Award (with DriverFocus).
Brake is a charity organisation and exists because every 30 seconds someone, somewhere, is killed in a road crash. They believe the misery of road deaths and injuries, and the pollution of our planet by vehicles, is a shameful epidemic. With your help, Brake in the UK campaigns to stop the carnage and supports the victims. Learn about their work in the UK by browsing their site, or visit www.fleetsafetyawards.com. Brake is funded by kind donations from individuals, companies and charitable grants.

The primary aim of the ABB Safe Driving for Work Programme is to proactively reduce the frequency and severity of collisions that ABB Ireland employees may be involved in whilst driving for work.

ABB's Safe Driving for Work Programme was recognised by the judging panel as a comprehensive, managed service that since 2009 has resulted in sustained reduction of motor claims by over 60%.

Speaking after the Award ceremony, Mark Sage, Country Sustainability Manager, ABB Ireland said “this Award is a clear, independent recognition of our ongoing Safe Driving for Work Programme whose success is due to the excellent engagement by all staff, including drivers and their managers. ABB’s proactive commitment to a 3 year rolling Programme indicates that managing driving for work is itself, like other safety critical programmes, a long journey.”

In recognising organisational as well as individual driver factors contributing to occupational road risk, ABB Ireland created a comprehensive Driving for Work Policy – covering Management, Driver, Vehicle & Journey elements - that informs its annual Safe Driving for Work activities.

Since late 2009, ABB has partnered with DriverFocus for driver risk management services and advice, based on international best-practice guidance and experience gained by DriverFocus working with other leading employers in Ireland and the UK.
Established in 2006, DriverFocus is a leading Dublin-based, driver risk management service provider that helps major government and corporate entities prevent collisions and associated harm and loss. DriverFocus has pioneered the use in Ireland of web-based systems to objectively assess individual drivers, benchmark organisational road safety preparedness and in collaboration with its clients, create dynamic Driver Safety Programmes to help clients reduce risk and liability exposure.

The Programme began in 2009 with ABB senior managers from across the business as well as some drivers, being interviewed by DriverFocus as part of a fleet safety audit to establish and benchmark existing policies, procedures and practices.

In 2010, 65 employees who drove for work in ABB, then participated in a 2 hour workshop, delivered by a DriverFocus fleet driving instructor. Based on risk assessment findings and skills assessment performance, 20 drivers underwent a 2 hour, 1:1 in-vehicle assessment of their driving. In 2011, the Programme was extended to “grey fleet” drivers (those employees using their own vehicle for work purposes).

Merrion Fleet Management were also instrumental in providing ABB detailed collision analysis and advice on management interventions to minimise the frequency and cost of collisions.

Over the past 18 months, 50 ABB employees, who drive company-owned vehicles 1.5 millions kilometres per annum and a further 40 "grey-fleet" drivers, participated in the Programme which includes:
- Online driver risk assessment
- Online hazard perception skills evaluation
- Targeted online training (for all drivers plus invited friends and family)
- In-vehicle programme (including behavioural–based telematics pilot).

At Management level, activities undertaken in 2012 included:
- Senior Management Forum on DFW
- Issuing a comprehensive Driver’s Handbook
- Driving for Work policy & procedure review, including a risk assessment of all driving activities
- Line Manager workshop with fleet instructor
- Driver Safety kits
- Driver Safety article in company magazine.
