ABB to set up Robotics Application Center in Chongqing

Company’s third of its kind in China aims to tap strong growth and promote industry’s development in the western region

Chongqing, December 17, 2016

ABB has announced to set up a Robotics Application Center in Chongqing to expand its footprint in western China.

An agreement was signed today between ABB and Chongqing’s Liangjiang New Area Administrative Committee, witnessed by Zhang Zhikui, Vice Secretary-general of Chongqing Municipal People's Government and Tang Zongwei, deputy director of Chongqing Liangjiang New Area Administrative Committee.

ABB Robotics Chongqing Application Center will provide robots, applications, system integration and related customer services to integrate resource and to push the development of industrial robots. The application center will especially meet the fast-growing need for industrial robots in automotive, 3C electronics, equipment manufacturing and consumer goods manufacturing in southwestern China.

“Smart technology such as industrial robots can help transform and upgrade the manufacturing sector, supporting China’s efforts in becoming a world manufacturing power,” said Dr. Chunyuan Gu, Senior Vice President of ABB Group and Chairman and President of ABB (China) Ltd. “By establishing a new application center, ABB aims to push the development of the robotic industry in Chongqing, support local industrial upgrade and help customers enhance competitiveness.”

“ABB is a technology leader in power and automation, as well as in industrial robots. There is no doubt that ABB’s new robotics application center will help improve the level of smart manufacturing in Chongqing and in Liangjiang,” said Tang Zongwei with the Liangjiang New Area Administrative Committee.

Chongqing, on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, is the largest industrial and commercial city in southwestern China. The megacity is now home to major industrial clusters in industries ranging from electronic information, automotive and equipment manufacturing to chemicals, materials, energy and consumer goods manufacturing, under a government plan to revitalize the old industrial base.

However, the difficulty of recruiting workers and the rapid rise of land, labor and raw materials costs in recent years have prompted central and western China, represented by Chongqing, to upgrade and transform their manufacturing sector so as to remain competitive – with industrial robots emerging as a major solution to address these challenges.

As the world's leading supplier of industrial robots, ABB provides strong solutions for automotive, plastics, metal fabrication, foundry, electronics, machine tools, pharmaceutical and food and beverage industries to help manufacturers improve productivity, product quality and worker safety. So far, ABB has installed more than 300,000 robots worldwide.

ABB Robotics entered China in 1994 and set up an ABB robot R&D center and production base in Shanghai in 2005. After more than 20 years of rapid development, ABB has become the only multinational company that builds industrial robots in China along the fully localized value chain, including R&D, production, sales, engineering, system integration and services. Currently, the ABB Robotics Shanghai production base has manufactured over 50,000 robots.

The Chongqing center will join ABB Robotics’ application centers in Zhuhai and Qingdao to become the company’s third of its kind in China, as ABB continues to step up its localization efforts.

After years of expansion, Chongqing has become a key R&D and manufacturing base for ABB in China. The city is home to ABB Transformer Co., Ltd. and Chongqing ABB Jiangjin Turbo Systems Co., Ltd., in addition to a comprehensive ABB regional service hub and an engineering center, with a workforce of around 900 employees and a complete sales and service network.
ABB has participated in the construction of such key local projects as the Jiangbei International Airport, Nanchuan Stadium, Chongqing city light rails, Wanzhou Power Plant and Chang’an Ford’s factory.

Elsewhere, ABB has been a member of the Chongqing Mayor's International Economic Advisory Council (CMIA) for 11 consecutive years to support the city’s development. And in June 2015, ABB held its biggest customer event in China – the Automation World – in Chongqing, for the first time in western China.

ABB (ABBN: SIX Swiss Ex) is a pioneering technology leader in electrification products, robotics and motion, industrial automation and power grids, serving customers in utilities, industry and transport & infrastructure globally. Continuing more than a 125-year history of innovation, ABB today is writing the future of industrial digitalization and driving the Energy and Fourth Industrial Revolutions. ABB operates in more than 100 countries with about 135,000 employees. ABB has a full range of business activities in China, including R&D, manufacturing, sales and services, with 18,000 employees, 40 local companies, and an extensive sales and service network across 147 cities.
