ABB drives new era of marine with cutting-edge digital solutions

On December 5, ABB showcased its innovative products and digital solutions covering the full lifecycle of the marine industry at the Marintec China 2017, demonstrating both cutting-edge technologies and rich experience. Furthermore, ABB announced the inauguration of its Shanghai ABB Ability™ Collaborative Operation Center which will work with customers to fully improve fleets’ operations and competitiveness through digital connectivity.

“China is one of the largest shipbuilding markets in the world. The emergence of 21st Century Maritime Silk Road has created new historical opportunities for vigorous development of the country’s shipbuilding industry and marine economy,” said Jiang Haibo, Head of Industrial Automation division, ABB China. “Over the years, ABB has been introducing digital solutions and services by combining our rich experience with cutting-edge technologies in the field of marine and ports, in order to help ship builders, owners and operators tap the full lifecycle value and drive the Chinese shipbuilding industry to a leading position worldwide.”

As part of ABB’s digital offerings, the Shanghai ABB Ability™ Collaborative Operation Center for Marine will leverage a large number of sensors and advanced analysis software to monitor and analyze operating data from devices and systems on customers’ vessels in real time on a 24/7 basis. The center will quickly diagnose potential problems onboard ship, provide preventive maintenance advice, and optimize sailing routes by combining weather forecast with vessel navigation information, to help customers enhance the fleet’s overall performance and operational efficiency.

This new Center will be connected to the other eight operation centers supporting Marine worldwide as part of a central nervous system that collaboratively monitors and controls clients’ ABB products and systems and provides real-time technical support for efficient operations of customers’ fleets. Today, ABB offers remote monitoring and real-time support to more than 700 ships worldwide and the figure is set to reach 3,000 by 2020.

Growing the ABB Ability™ portfolio, ABB launched its first digital turbocharging solutions for enhanced performance, operational flexibility and lower operating costs for marine customers. These solutions, including Tekomar XPERT, will further harness the power of digitalization through connection to the vessel optimization system and ABB Ability™ Collaborative Operations Centers established in the marine sector. This combines the collective expertise of ABB in marine propulsion, optimization, advisory, and turbocharging, with digital connectivity.

Showcasing the ABB Ability™ Drive Remote Monitoring and Retrofitting Service represented another ABB Marintec highlight. Carrying out maintenance and repair services can often prove difficult onboard ship due to the limited space available. The remote service can offer timely warnings, fault diagnosis and feedback by observing operating data of clients’ drive equipment, so as to provide reliable remote support for offshore operations. Where yard work is required, it can be better planned in advance so that less time is spent in port and more at sea.

As a pioneering technology leader, ABB offers marine customers a full range of products and solutions covering electric propulsion systems, power generation and distribution systems, onboard drive systems, motors and generators, measurement and analytics products, turbocharging systems, shore-to-ship power supply systems and integrated automation and marine software, to help them improve ships’ and offshore platforms’ energy efficiency, flexibility and reliability to higher levels.

In the 340m2-plus showcase, ABB also presented multiple series of marine generator and motor products that are used for power supply, lighting, heating, hydraulic driving, water supply and fire-fighting systems on ships of different sizes. ABB’s comprehensive range of measurement and analytics products and solutions can meet diverse needs such as marine emissions monitoring, ballast water treatment, energy management, steam measurement and optimization of diesel engine operating condition. ABB’s multiple electrification products and cloud services including MNS Digital low-voltage switchgear, iUniGear medium-voltage intelligent switchgear, safe and reliable medium-voltage switchgear- Unisec, and arc guard system can provide continuous and reliable power support for stable operation of ships.

The Marintec China is Asia’s largest and the world’s second largest maritime event. It is a bridge and link for the international maritime community to seek all-round and multi-level cooperation. The 19th Marintec China will be held at the Shanghai New International Expo Center on December 5-8, 2017.
