ABB and Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks team up at golf day to raise £3,000 for charities

Stone, February 7th 2017 – Engineers on the Caithness Moray Link raised funds at their team building golf day, with ABB choosing Highland Disability Sport to receive half the funds
Engineers working on the Caithness Moray Link from ABB and Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) raised a total of £3,000 at a golf-themed team building day late last year, with each half of the team selecting a chosen charity.

ABB’s team nominated Highland Disability Sport to receive half of the funds, building on a relationship that started in 2015 when ABB sponsored the charity’s Junior Festival of Sport and provided volunteers to support the competition, when 90 school children from across the Highlands competed in the annual competition in events such as archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boccia, golf and petanque. As well as sponsoring the event, ABB also presented all the participants with medals of achievement.

SSEN donated its half to the Friends of Town and County Hospital Garden as a contribution towards creating a therapeutic, enjoyable and accessible garden space for patients, relatives and friends.

ABB first started its relationship with Highland Disability Sport in 2015 because the charity fits with ABB’s long tradition of working with education and healthcare organisations and also because Highland Disability Sport is on the doorstep of several high profile ABB projects, including the Caithness Moray HVDC Link and MeyGen.

Lesley Jones, Administrator for Highland Disability Sport said: “It is thanks to funds raised by people and organisations like ABB and SSEN that Highland Disability Sport can provide the joy of sports training, athletic competition and shared identity for children and young adults with intellectual and learning disabilities from across the Highlands.”

Jon Downs, ABB’s business unit manager for power grids and grid integration, said: “I am delighted that ABB’s team some of whom are working on the Caithness Moray project chose to support Highland Disability Sport at their golf charity event. It is a true pleasure to support a charity that builds confidence and connection between young people with learning disabilities.
