Largest Red TIE event to date presented in Syracuse, New York
2013-07-17 - With more than 70 customers attending, the Syracuse Red TIE event was the largest ever presented by the ABB Transformers business. The popular ABB roadshow series offers one-day training tailored to customer needs.
The ABB North America Transformers business unit presented its largest Red TIE (Technical Information Exchange) customer training event to date on June 4, 2013 in Syracuse, New York. The one-day event drew 72 customers from 20 organizations for a day of training and networking time with ABB experts.
The ABB Transformers business unit – including Power Transformers, Service and Components – has built on a successful formula for hosting a popular series of one-day customer training and networking events that started in 2008. The so-called “Red TIE Events” continue to satisfy the needs of its transformer customers by allowing attendees to select topics from a list of 14 different topics that are of interest to them when they register to attend.
Also on hand at the Syracuse Red TIE event was a model of the new Vacuum Reactance on-Load Tap Changer (VRLTC). The type VRLTC tap changer represents a significant advance in the technology of tap changing with its digital drive system and intelligent, digital monitoring system. The digital monitoring system is a solid platform upon which ABB will build more advanced communication features. This will allow customers to integrate the type VRLTC tap changer into their smart grid systems.
Typically a Red TIE gathering consists of about 40 customers in attendance from a variety of businesses. Businesses represented at the Syracuse event included Investor Owned Utilities (IOUs) and Public Power businesses, as well as Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPCs). Typically consultants are in attendance as well.
The Red TIE format consists of six one-hour training seminars led by ABB Transformers subject matter experts. Seminar topics in Syracuse included:
- Transformer failure modes
- Design review process of power transformers
- Load tap changers: design, application and maintenance
- Processing and relocation of power transformers
- Voltage stabilization in transmission grids with fixed and variable shunt reactors
- Transformer life extension: options and considerations
The Red TIE event in Syracuse was the third Red TIE for 2013. The 2013 season opened in Toronto, Canada. A special Red TIE was hosted in conjunction with the AWEA Windpower show with a special focus on wind related transformer topics. Three additional Red TIE events are planned across North America in 2013 including August 20 in Los Angeles, September 17 in Kansas City, MO, and September 26 in Atlanta.
Red TIE events represent a “technical exchange” between our customers and ABB, and are not commercial events. These training programs provide customers with:
- a full day of customized, technical training
- an opportunity to discuss technical matters of importance
- an opportunity to network with industry peers
- an official Red TIE Certificate upon completion to obtain up to six continuing-education credits/hours
