ABB electrification services help customers upgrade circuit breakers easily

2017-10-18 - Service product Emax2 DR-RF significantly reduces power distribution switchgear renovation time and cost
A radio station, with several circuit breakers in service for more than a decade, needed replacing. The next-generation of circuit breakers were required since spare parts were no longer available for the older breakers. ABB provided a circuit breaker upgrade conversion kit solution, which not only avoided the addition of new distribution switchgear, but also met the existing distribution system’s requirements for performance, structure, management and security. The power interruption time was less than 20 minutes and the flexibility of the standard kit enabled a perfect match to the original cabinet, extending the system’s life and enabling stable operation at a low cost for the customer.

Recently, ABB launched a new service product, Emax2 DR-RF, for direct replacement of the Megamax F circuit breaker. The replacement of the circuit breaker can be made rapidly without power interruption or any change in cabinet, thus effectively reducing renovation costs and production losses. The product has been widely used by customers from many industries, such as media, communications and hospitals.

Megamax F, the first ABB SACE air-insulated circuit breaker launched on the global market in 1989, served ABB’s power customers worldwide for more than two decades by virtue of its advanced technology, reliable quality and perfect performance. Then the Emax2 DR-RF came onto the market completely replacing the existing 2,500 A and lower withdrawable Megamax F circuit breaker.

In China, many customers still use Megamax F, but these now need upgrading. The question is how can this be achieved easily and efficiently?

At the beginning of 2017, ABB’s Electrification Products service team organized dozens of promotions to introduce and recommend circuit breaker upgrade solutions to its customers. ABB Emax2 DR-RF features an originally designed DIN-rail, which eliminates the need for base removal. The old circuit breaker can be guided out, while Emax2 DR-RF can be guided in. The secondary electrical connection is preassembled to enable plug-and-play ease of fitting. The replacement can be completed within 20 minutes, significantly saving time and money. When compared to the replacement mode through deployment of new distribution switchgear and on-site customization of busbar, which is subject to long power interruptions and higher costs, the new service product has obvious advantages and wide application.

“Knowing the intentions and needs of our customers from various industries, we are able to respond to them rapidly and follow up in a timely manner,” said Wang Mingyong, head of Sales Support for the Electrification Products division in ABB China. “We are able to upgrade their circuit breakers easily to achieve intelligent management of distribution switchgear and further enhance their energy efficiency.”

ABB’s Electrification Products services not only provides maintenance, repair, upgrades, renovation, technical training and spare parts over the full life cycle of the product, it also brings more opportunities and options for construction, renovation/expansion and overhaul projects.
