Winners of the eighth ABB Cup National Automation Thesis Contest announced

The thesis “Social Media based Meteorology+ Traffic incidents Detection and Alerting system” won the first prize. 21 teams from companies, universities and research institutes in automation field won the first, second and third prizes; 47 theses were awarded Memorial Prizes



The eighth ABB Cup National Automation Thesis Contest, themed with “Innovation, Connection and Smart Manufacturing of the Future”, concluded and revealed the list of winners at the Chinese Automation Congress & International Intelligent Manufacturing Conference, held in Jinan, on October 21.

The thesis “Social Media based Meteorology+ Traffic incidents Detection and Alerting system”, written by five contestants from School of Computer Science of Beijing Institute of Technology and Public Meteorological Service Center of China Meteorological Administration, stood out from the 583 submissions and won the first prize. It addressed the problems found in the early warning system for urban “meteorology+” traffic forecast, like the difficulty in collecting physical data, high latency of data fusion and the severe phenomenon of data silo, and rasied the new thought of filling the physical gap of “meteorology+” traffic data via crowdsourcing knowledge in social media, with the aim to build the detection and alerting system for urban “meteorology+” traffic incidents.

Moreover, another five theses won the second prizes, including “Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Control for Extrusion Mechanism of 3D Printer”, co-written by three contestants from Changsha University of Science and Technology and Beijing Institute of Technology, and “Key Technologies for Intelligent Control of Supercritical/Ultra-supercritical Thermal Power Units”, co-written by six contestants from Electric Power Research Institute of Hunan Power Supply Company and Key Laboratory of Efficient and Clean Thermal Power Generation Technology in Hunan province. Covering a variety of areas such as utility, industry, transportation, infrastructure and environmental protection, these prize-winning theses demonstrate how the advanced digital and automation control technologies can be applied in different trades.

ABB Cup National Automation Thesis Contest was initiated by the Chinese Association of Automation in 2005, with ABB (China) Ltd. as the exclusive sponsor. The contest is oriented to people engaged in engineering, technology, design, management, operation, maintenance and training functions in enterprises and public institutions, or those who are working as teachers and engineers at universities and research institutes.

Over the past 12 years, the contest has gained increasing attentions in the automation field. To date, the contest has attracted the participation of 8,541 contestants and received 3,723 theses with 223 from which being elected as award-winning ones. In addition, 8 collections of theses have been published which include a total of over 600 high-quality theses.It provides an effective communication platform for the exchange of cutting-edge technologies and experiences for domestic automation industry, and also promotes the integration of automation industry and academic research.

Organized by Chinese Association of Automation and Jinan Municipal Government, Chinese Automation Congress & International Intelligent Manufacturing Conference 2017, with the theme of “Intelligent automation changes the world”, was held to offer a platform for discussion and communicaion for scholars and technical personnel in automation and intelligent manufacturing area as well as to showcase the latest technological development.
