ABB continues investment in electric vehicle charging together with Volvo Buses
2016-10-24 - ABB has inaugurated the first charging station for electric buses together with Volvo Buses. The fast charger, with the associated systems, is based on the open interface OppCharge, and it serves as an important reference for future joint business.
The recently inaugurated charging station has been installed next to Volvo’s electric bus depot in Arendal, and it is a joint reference project for ABB and Volvo Buses. The aim of the cooperation initiative is to jointly develop and commercialize electric buses and hybrid electric buses that are equipped with DC fast charging systems that are based on open standards.

At the inauguration ABB was represented by Head of Discrete Automation and Motion in Sweden Robert Larsson, eMobility Product Manager Jenny Miltell and eMobility Sales Manager Henrik Holmér. President of Volvo Bus Corporation Håkan Agnevall and Environmental Director Edward Jobson participated on behalf of Volvo Buses.
“We are pleased to take part and contribute to sustainable and cost-efficient transportation solutions, and at the same time satisfy the continually growing need cities have for such transportation. Cutting the costs and reducing the risks associated with switching to electric vehicles are aspects that we, together with Volvo, want to offer the market and society. OppCharge, which creates an open interface for both buses and charging stations, is also expected to become a standard for the future”, says Robert Larsson, Head of Discrete Automation and Motion in Sweden.
The demonstration of buses and charging station as product and system gives a clear picture of what the installation looks like for the customer. Maximum utilization of existing electric vehicle technology will accelerate the rise of green and emission-free public transit in cities.
“It is very gratifying to inaugurate yet another charging station based on the open interface for fast charging – OppCharge. Volvo’s electric buses and electric buses from other manufacturers can be charged here. With OppCharge, European cities can rest assured that electric buses and charging infrastructure from different manufacturers are compatible with each other and that lock-in effects can be avoided. This creates the conditions needed for an accelerated transition to electric bus systems in cities,” says Håkan Agnevall, President of Volvo Bus Corporation.
