ABB starts-up the new cleantech paint factory of ESKARO in Ukraine

The new factory focuses on a cleantech concept integrating the latest technologies for a cleaner production of environmental friendly paint
Zurich, Switzerland, January 7, 2013 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has announced the start-up of the new paint production facilities, built for ESKARO Group AB in Odessa, Ukraine. When in operation the plant will have a capacity of 15,000 tons/year of water-borne decorative paint.

ABB was responsible for the detailed engineering, the supply of core process equipment and also the erection supervision and start-up assistance.

The scope of supply included two 5 cubic meters conical dispersers of ABB Delicel™ range, which are able to process batches of variable sizes down to 20% of their nominal capacity. Delicel™ dispersers have a dual–shaft mixing unit, combining high shearing and high pumping effects for an efficient mixing in terms of product quality and energy consumption. ABB supplied also one up-and-down disperser for small batches, storage and let-down tanks. Powder handling is ergonomic and transfer operations are automatic. The transfer of liquids - resins, finished products, premixes, glues and putties – is operated in closed circuit using pigged lines for the transfer to storage and let-downs tanks as well as to filling lines. Resins are dosed using an ABB piggable collector, combining pigged lines and massflow meter for an accurate dosing. Pigged lines enable the total recovery of products and cleaning water. Formulas, recipes, manufacturing and filling operations are controlled by Paintcel™ control system. It optimizes the operations and enhances the factory flexibility as well as the equipment availability, by executing operations in hidden times such as the pigging of transfer lines or cleaning operations. Paintcel™ ensures the traceability of actions – even half-automated ones - and a fine-tuning of process parameters to easily control the consumption of raw materials and water.

In addition to efficiency and increased productivity, ABB solutions and control systems provide Eskaro with production facilities compliant with health, safety and environmental standards by reducing emissions, product losses and recycling water. Furthermore, waste water will be treated by evaporation and condensation of vapours. Treated water will be reused in the process as cleaning water.

With this new factory, Eskaro aims at increasing their share of the Ukrainian paint market up to 20% in five years. The growth potential has been also taken into account during the detail design phase and extension possibilities are planned so as to reach a capacity of 30,000 tons/year.
