ABB showcases smart technology at EP China 2014

Beijing, October 22, 2014 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, showcased its full power portfolio, featuring reliable, smart and environmental-friendly specifications at the 15th International Exhibition on Electric Power Equipment and Technology (EP China 2014), the largest power and electrical exhibition in China.

Among the exhibits one highlight is ABB microgrid system and energy store system, Microgrid Plus™ System and PowerStore. These systems are proven technology with more than 15 yeas’ stabilization in worldwide market.

Microgrid is an integrated energy system intelligently managing interconnected loads and distributed energy resources and capable of operating in parallel with, or independently, from the existing utility’s grid. It has become an important developing trend in modern smart grid.

ABB Microgrid Plus™ System calculates the most economical power configuration, ensuring a proper balance of supply and demand that maximizes renewable energy integration, providing for up to 100% renewable penetration and highest level of stability and reliability. It optimizes the network’s generators operations so the entire system performs at peak potential. This solution helps customers achieve grid quality power without the need to burn tons of fossil fuel, avoiding the equivalent CO2 emissions. Recently ABB delivered and commissioned a microgrid control solution that enables the island of Azores, Portuguese to add more wind energy to its power mix without destabilizing the network. The integration of wind energy combined with ABB’s innovative solution will save an estimated 3.5 million liters of fuel per year.

PowerStore of ABB integrated commercial flywheel technology and battery system to enable the integration of more renewable to microgrid and also to address stability challenges of grid. In China, PowerStore was applied in the Zhangbei Wind Farm. Recently, PowerStore supported the microgrid project of China’s wind power company Goldwind in Yizhuang, Beijing, China.

China is stepping up support for distributed generation. The country’s grid companies said they would permit easier access to the power grid for distributed energy resource projects fuelled by natural gas, wind and solar energy. Microgrid Plus and PowerStore work by dispatching or controlling the power of fossil-fuel and renewable energy-based generators and eligible loads in a coordinated manner, allowing customers access to utility grade power, virtually anywhere.

“ABB is committed to bringing its reliable, smart, and green power products and solutions to China. We will continue to work to expand our portfolio here in China in line with the increasing market demand,” said Zhang Jinquan, head of Power Systems Division, ABB North Asia and China.

EP is recognized as the largest electric power and electrical exhibition in China. EP China 2014 will bring together 800 leading suppliers from 16 countries/regions this year. EP China 2014 theme is Intelligence, Energy conservation and New opportunity, which are also the key words for China’s power industry.
