ABB now offers a full range of dust ignition protection motors
2017-04-03 - ABB has completed its range of fully certified dust ignition protection and increased safety aluminum frame motors with new products in sizes 160 to 280. These motors offer a lightweight alternative to the existing cast iron ranges.

Following the introduction of the new motors, ABB can now offer full coverage with optimized products for any application where protection against the risk of dust or gas explosions is required. This risk is sometimes overlooked because many of the substances involved – including grain, sugar, starch, flour, and coffee – are common products in everyday use that are not normally regarded as explosive. Premises that process or handle these substances, as well as other fine, powdered, combustible materials can greatly increase their safety levels by using dust ignition protection motors rather than standard products.
The very smooth surface of aluminum frame motors means they are ideal for locations where there is a risk of dust explosions. This is because dust cannot collect on their surface, which makes cleaning easier and enhances safety while reducing costs. The lightweight aluminum frame also enables the use of simpler support structures, providing savings in materials and cost.
The new aluminum frame motors have third-party ATEX and IECEx certification. The dust ignition protection (Ex tb and Ex tc) motors can be used in Zones 21 and 22. The increased safety (Ex ec) motors are suitable for use in Zone 2. Ex ec is the new increased safety protection concept introduced by the latest revision of IEC/EN 60079-7, replacing non-sparking (Ex nA) protection for electric motors.
The new motors are available in efficiency classes IE2 and IE3, offering significant potential for energy saving compared to Standard Efficiency (IE1) alternatives. For even greater energy savings, the motors are certified for use with ABB variable speed drives (VSDs).
ABB’s range of low voltage aluminum motors for explosive atmospheres now covers frame sizes 71-280 (0.25-79 kW). They are available in 2-6 pole versions, in all common voltages, for both 50 and 60 hertz (Hz). The robust cast iron frame motors extend the range up to 1,000 kW and offer additional performance and design flexibility.
