ABB to supply 21 generators for major power plant in Azerbaijan

2012-12-05 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order to supply 21 generators for a 384 MW gas power plant project in Azerbaijan. Located near Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital, the Boyuk Shor plant will be operated by Azerenerji JSC, a state-owned utility company. It will produce electricity for the capital city region.
The generator order was received from Wärtsilä, a leading supplier of power plant solutions. The plant will have 21 Wärtsilä natural gas fuelled engines, each driving an ABB synchronous generator rated at 23 MVA. The generators will be manufactured at ABB’s Helsinki factory and delivered in late 2012. Commissioning of the power plant is scheduled for fall, 2013.

This latest order follows ABB’s involvement in a number of successful power plant projects in Azerbaijan. From 2005 to 2008 ABB supplied a total of 82 generators for seven power plants with a combined output of more than 860 MW. These generators, which were also supplied in cooperation with Wärtsilä, now produce approximately one-fifth of Azerbaijan’s electricity.
