The welding market is expected to grow at a substantial rate in the coming years. Some of the major drivers contributing to its overall growth include increasing demand for greater safety, and improved productivity and quality. As a result companies are seeking innovative new ways to maximize throughput via the use of automated solutions, including robotic applications.

On display this year at Schweissen and Schneiden is the IRB 1660ID, the most versatile mid-size robot in its class. The robot will be performing a welding application while an IRB 2600 inspects the quality of the weld, using the latest 3D vision inspection technology. These advanced quality inspection tools are ideal for in-line measuring with automatic loading and unloading operation. The IRB 2600 is equipped with SafeMove2, ABB’s safety certified robot monitoring software. It enables people to safely work alongside ABB robots with payloads ranging from 6kg to 800kg without compromising productivity.
Also on display is ABB’s portfolio for remote laser welding, or "welding on the fly" equipment. The application combines a robot and scanner optics to position the focused laser beam on the workpiece. It takes only a few seconds to join components like car doors with high integrity laser welds. The robot arm guides the scanner optics along a smooth path over the workpiece for greater accuracy.
Digitalization ties it all together, where actionable information leads to better decisions, and helps large automotive plants or small machine shops unlock the benefits of ABB’s concept of the Industrial Internet of Things - increasing productivity, flexibility and efficiency along the entire value chain. A prime example of the trend towards digitalization is ABB Ability™ Connected Services. Visitors will be able to see a firsthand demonstration of how this platform for robots can prevent up to 25 percent of incidents, and speed response times and issue resolution by up to 60 percent. ABB Ability Connected Services are part of the ongoing evolution of the Remote Services for robots that ABB introduced almost 10 years ago and today, there are over 7,000 robots in 750 factories around the world integrated into the ABB Ability Connected Services ecosystem.
