The Smarter Home Developer Program was designed by ABB to offer consumers a broader selection of added value, smarter living options. By opening its systems up to technology developers and service providers alike, consumers can access enhanced solutions to maximize comfort, security and even energy efficiency within their own home.
The availability of three interface variants; the new application programming interface (API) for the ABB-free@home® system, the Connectivity Hub (currently under development) and mozaiq operations GmbH platform, of which ABB is a key partner, further demonstrates ABB’s commitment to enhance and expand the availability of smarter living solutions.
Mike Mustapha, managing director of ABB’s Building Products Business comments: “At ABB our focus is on delivering the very best solution for the end user. We deliver our solutions under the ABB brand around the world and under Busch-Jaeger in Germany, the Netherlands and Austria.
“By working collaboratively with other technology developers and partners we are able to drive forward progress in the rapidly growing smarter living sector, cementing our position as market leaders in electrical installation technology.”
API for ABB-free@home
The new API for ABB-free@home makes it possible for manufacturers and service providers to dynamically integrate the data from ABB’s Smart Home System needed for the application in their own software. The API can be used to regulate the transfer and further processing of data and content between different webpages, programs and systems via a cloud.
Currently in the study phase and planned for release in 2018, the Connectivity Hub can be used by developers to offer their own services and applications, and to participate in other systems and values. The connectivity hub communicates as local hardware with external devices via a cloud, and with devices in the local network. Thus, developers are given diverse options for implementation. The platform documentation is already available, so that developers have the capability to write their application now.
mozaiq, a startup founded by ABB, Cisco and Bosch provides an IoT marketplace to connect devices and services. The company addresses device manufacturers and consumer brands seeking to connect networked consumer devices with all kinds of services. By creating a business ecosystem, ABB and its partners were able to facilitate cooperation and to accommodate of stakeholders’ varying demands and perspectives as the software platform was developed.
The result is a platform which brings the Internet of Things into consumers’ homes, making it easy and secure for a wide range of products to communicate with each other. Consumers are able to seamlessly and intuitively tailor their appliances and devices, regardless of brand, to deliver an unprecedented level of control, comfort and significantly improve energy efficiency.
Mustapha continues: “The smart home market is very diverse with a range of systems and solutions which don’t always speak the same language. The availability of open interfaces from ABB are therefore even more crucial if we are to deliver a comprehensive solution for the home owner.
“Our market leading technology can for example link a photovoltaic system directly to a consumer appliance such as a washing machine or heating element or can connect a home emergency service to sensors such as light switches and motion detectors, immediately alerting the provider as to when there may be a problem.”
Crucially for the end user, all of this is possible without compromising the security of the data, with a decision taken by ABB and the end client on what data to transfer to developers and providers, whilst retaining ultimate control.
