Shanghai, November 5, 2013 -- ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, introduced the IRB 6700, its 7th generation industrial robot, at the China International Industrial Fair (CIIF) 2013. At the same time, it showcased its leading smart technologies, including automated manufacturing and production, high-efficient drivers and motors, and energy management platform at its booths for robots and automated products. These efforts reflect ABB’s leadership in smart manufacturing and energy efficiency.
Industrial robots are key building blocks of smart manufacturing and enablers of intelligent upgrading. “China is now in the critical stage of evolving from traditional to smart manufacturing. Advanced manufacturing and production are necessary for a healthy manufacturing industry. ABB will continue to adhere to its ‘in China, for China and the World’ strategy and provide its leading innovative technologies and solutions for smart manufacturing, including the latest industrial robots, to support customers realize an intelligent upgrading.” Said Dr. Chun-yuan Gu, Head of Discrete Automation and Motion Division, ABB North Asia Region and China.
ABB’s IRB 6700 family is the next generation of large industrial robots, with a payload of 150-300kg and featuring more precision compared with previous generations. Its energy consumption will also be reduced by 15% with non-fault operation of over 400,000 hours (equivalent to productivity by a worker in 200 years by working 8 hours a day). Because of its high reliability and easy maintenance, this family of robots can lower the total cost of the life cycle. For now, it has 4 variations for a wide range of applications, such as welding, material handling and machine tending.

With the fast upgrade cycle of automotive products and diversified market demands, manufacturers have a very strong need for flexible manufacturing of different models on the same production line. At the show, ABB showcased its flexible manufacturing systems for automakers. This will not only help address customer demand in the real world, but also increase productivity and flexibility. The systems feature advanced technical parts for pressing, welding, and painting, as well as “plug and play” StampPack. ABB flexible body-in-white solutions and leading painting solutions also provide safety, high-speed, and ease-of-use, and high flexibility.
ABB is the only multinational company with a truly localized value chain for industrial robots, including R&D, production, sales, engineering, and services. The company offers different solutions with its die-casting, packing, assembly, and gluing applications. In addition, its robotic solutions for 3D curve processing stations, automatic packing lines, small assembly stations, and small 3D gluing systems help address productivity and safety challenges.
Improved productivity and energy efficiency and lower environment impact are significant advantages of smart technologies to help customers achieve the goal of energy savings and emission reduction. The new ACS880 industrial drives, the next generation ABB drives, are designed on an all-compatible architecture. The drives meet the unique demands of different processes of manufacturing to help them meet environmental goals. These drives have lowered the energy consumption of stock water pumps by 80% for Switzerland’s Fiskeby Board, Europe’s oldest manufacturer of paper and packaging board.
ABB energy efficient motors on show
Motors account for a huge percentage of the total energy consumption of industrial production. In China, more than 50% of the nation’s electricity is used to power industrial motors. The wide deployment of efficient motors is increasingly becoming a top priority. One 11kW ABB motor, which is 2% more efficient than ordinary motors, can save 33.6 mWh per year, corresponding to 1.1 tons of CO2 emissions. M3BP process performance cast iron motors, M3AA process performance aluminum motors, and M2BA general performance cast iron motors, all produced locally in China, can be widely used to help customers save energy in the Pulp and Paper, Metals, Marine, Water, Chemical, and Food and Beverage industries, among others. ABB IE3 premium efficiency motors will also be showcased at CIIF 2013.
ABB’s cpmPlus Energy Manager offers the tools to help customers adapt to a low carbon footprint and green development trends through energy management. Typically, it can help achieve overall cost reductions of 2-5% of the total electricity cost for enterprises to optimize its energy use by addressing the energy requirements of energy heavy equipment and enterprises.
The China International Industrial Fair is the largest, most authoritative, and most influential international fair in China and the Asia Pacific for exhibiting the latest industrial technology and products. ABB is showcasing its leading innovative technologies and solutions at the show, while sharing its rich global experience. CIIF has become a key platform for ABB to discuss the latest industry developments and technology innovation trends. This year, ABB has two booths, one for automated products (W1-A001) and one for robotics(N1-A001), with a combined space of more than 580 square meters. ABB is displaying its smart technology and solutions from November 5-9.
