ABB in Portugal supplies robot-controlled painting systems to Volkswagen Autoeuropa

2012-12-13 - Volkswagen Autoeuropa awarded ABB a contract to supply robot-controlled paint systems to refurbish the factory’s painting line.
Volkswagen Autoeuropa, located in Palmela, Portugal, is one of the German Volkswagen Group car manufacturing units. The company, active in the country since 1995, represents the largest foreign investment made in Portugal to date.

On 27th July 2012, the company’s management formalized the order for an important robotized painting line project, which consists of a number of robots (half of which IRB5500), which will be supplied by the ABB subsidiaries in Italy and Portugal.

The IRB5500 robots will paint the interior and exterior of the car bodies, ensuring speed uniformity, high quality and flexibility to adapt to work in future bodies.

The ABB teams from Italy and Portugal could also count on the German subsidiary support. The three teams worked in close cooperation since the release of the specifications, in October 2011.

José Rodrigues, responsible for Robotics, a part of ABB’s division Discrete Automation and Motion and leader of the Portuguese team, said: "Obtaining this order is, of course, a matter of great importance to ABB. The next goal, which I’m sure we’ll achieve, will be to complete the work ensuring total customer satisfaction."
