ABB preannounces the sixth generation of its market-leading synchronizing and paralleling technology, SYNCHROTACT® 6, at ABB Customer World China in Hangzhou on June 28-29, 2017. The product will be available for purchase later this year.
“We are delighted to announce the upcoming launch of this remarkable sixth generation product,” says Kevin Kosisko, managing director of ABB’s power generation and water business. “SYNCHROTACT has long been the synchronizer of choice among utilities and power generators worldwide, thanks to its exceptional levels of safety and redundancy. It provides our end customers with the highest availability and the lowest possible total cost of ownership.”
For more than 50 years, SYNCHROTACT has protected power plant generators and substation components from the potentially destructive effects of current surges caused by unsynchronized operating conditions. ABB is able to draw on its long-standing spirit of innovation that represents its roots to the future. SYNCHROTRACT keeps these valuable production assets safe and at the highest levels of availability, for years to come.
SYNCHROTACT 6 contains new and enhanced features to maximize safety. It is the only synchronizer to have a diverse dual-channel design, with both channels located in the same SYNCHROTACT unit to minimize wiring, ensure perfect working compatibility and reduce the commissioning costs for the end customer. If one channel should fail, the other remains open, thereby guaranteeing reliability. The unit’s robust design is in accordance with the IEC 61508 SIL2 safety standard.
The number of parameter sets has been increased from 7 to 20, enabling up to 20 different circuit breakers to be synchronized by a single SYNCHROTRACT 6 device. Compliant with the IEC 61850 Ed. 2 communication standard, SYNCHROTACT 6 fulfills the most demanding requirements.
More than 22,000 SYNCHROTACT units have been sold since its introduction, equivalent to about 10 percent of the global market for synchronizing equipment. All the main generators at the Three Gorges Dam in China, the world’s largest hydropower plant, are equipped with SYNCHROTACT synchronizers.
SYNCHROTACT 6 is part of ABB’s offering of excitation products and synchronizing equipment for the power generation industry. The offering is the most comprehensive and proven on the market, extending from the smallest to the largest power requirements and covering all power generation applications.
